With more vision insurance options available than ever, understanding your plan helps you get the best value. Whether your coverage comes through an employer or a private provider, knowing what’s included helps you maximize your benefits.
Types of Vision Plans

- Vision Benefits Package – Often part of employer healthcare, this plan covers routine eye exams, eyewear discounts, and sometimes eye surgery. Many use pre-tax contributions through Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) or Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) to help with costs.

- Vision Discount Plans – These plans provide set discounts on exams, glasses, contacts, and even some surgical procedures. While they offer lower premiums than benefits packages, you pay the remaining balance out of pocket.

OHIP Coverage
OHIP provides coverage for comprehensive eye exams for some groups:
- Ages 19 and younger – every 12 months
- Ages 65+ – every 12 or 18 months
- Ages 20–64 – only some people with potentially sight-threatening conditions are eligible for an OHIP-insured comprehensive eye exam
